Few people are aware that the fastest growing segment of the population with HIV/AIDS are people over the age of 50 years old. However, older adults have very little outreach or education designed specifically for their needs.
For example, doctors rarely ask older adults if they are sexually active and attribute HIV/AIDS symptoms to aging. As a result, older adults are often diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at a much later and more serious stage of the disease than younger adults.
A growing, yet unnoticed segment of the population: the elderly, have been diagnosed with HIV / AIDS in this country. This 12% of the HIV / AIDS population has had very little outreach or education designed specifically for their needs.
JSPOA began the first HIV/AIDS education program designed specifically for older adults in New York City. The program, funded by the New York Foundation, includes presentations at senior centers, churches and community groups in Queens.
Trained older adults speak about their HIV/AIDS experiences with friends and relatives, as well as medical professionals discussing the details of the disease and answering questions.
